The Frontier Village Museum features the Adrian Depot, the Western Auto Building, and a Union Station replica that I built. Each building is uniquely crafted from everyday materials like paper, wood, and foam, surrounded by detailed landscaping and art. A special thank you goes to Ronnie Fritts and Mike Carpenter for their train layout design and for allowing creative freedom within Train Town. Blue Ribbon Cabin represents my final step in healing the deep trauma of losing my dear momma, Kay Jones, in 2016. On the rough night I struggled with writer's block while writing her obituary, I sat alone and pulled out a broken miniature cabin she had built in 1988, which had won a blue ribbon at the county fair. As the grandkids had played with it and broken the furniture, restoring it became an unexpected form of therapy, offering a comforting break between grief steps and giving me a new art project to look forward to. Over the last ten years, I rebuilt and reworked the pieces as I learned new skills, culminating this year in a completed, sealed showcase. Now, with Momma's ashes resting peacefully in the fireplace hearth, her hopes and dreams are finally headed back to the fair.
The No Thoroughfare gypsy wagon is one of my favorite creations, inspired by an early life of poverty where a lack of store-bought toys forced me to rely on imagination and creativity. Channeling the adaptable spirit of nineteenth-century traveling salesmen who constantly reinvented their ways to survive, I transformed a plain laser-cut model into a vibrant, purposeful piece of art with its own unique story.
